Last week we were fortunate enough to have professor Shiva Balaghi come to class and discuss Iraq and her biography of Saddam Hussein. She elaborated on some of the pictures that were in the book and went even further in depth on the country. Her knowledge of the country, especially Hussein himself, was incredible. She analyzed the less than reputable aspects of the government, such as the Hussein brothers, with a humor and intimacy that was very rewarding. She also painted an enlightening portrait of Iran during the time of the Muslim revolution. She showed us various images and art from the time period, and her knowledge of Persian made it all the more interesting. There were seemingly no questions about the region that she couldn’t answer with such insight that one assumes she must have been there. It was easily the most interesting and impressive class of the year.
