Syria Times reported on December 3rd, 2007 that on Sunday the Iranian Foreign Minister announced that further U.N. sanctions will not “solve the row with the West over Iran’s nuclear plans.” On Saturday, the five permanent members of the U.N. and Germany met in Paris to discuss imposing further sanctions on Tehran. A recent IAEA report stated that Iran is cooperating with the guidelines put forth, but not “proactively.” According to Syria Times, two rounds of sanctions have been placed on Iran for their failure to halt uranium enrichment, which Iran says is used for power plants and is their national right to make. Syria Times also notes that in the past, Russia and China have been reluctant to place harsh sanctions on Iran.
