The Tehran Times ran an article about Iraq’s plea for America to pursue diplomatic relations with Iran.  The article presents the Iraqi National Security Advisor, Mouwaffak al-Rubaie, as a demander for peace between the hostile nations. The discussion stems from Robert Gates’ call on Persian Gulf countries to pressure Tehran into renouncing it’s nuclear program, which Iran insists is used only for energy production, as opposed to weapons development. Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned Gates’ remarks saying that “Basically, this expression is an intervention in the domestic affairs of the regional countries.” The Iraqi government seems to believe that America’s isolationist attitude towards Iran will only further tension in the already violent region. Al- Hashemi told reporters that he does “believe Iran is a major power in the Middle East and holds a key for stability and peace for the whole region.” He added “This is why I’m saying that the nuclear issue should be sorted out in round-table negotiations.”
