Syria Times reported on December 9th, 2007 that 40 activists built a mock Palestinian settlement in the West Bank to protest the Israeli settlement expansion that is newly underway. One house was erected. The police tore down the house after they broke up the demonstration. The Israeli settlement project is receiving great criticism from the Palestinian population in the West Bank, as it would split the territory in half and isolate east Jerusalem. Syria Times notes that‚ “Israel occupied East Jerusalem in 1967 and annexed it without international approval. It considers all of Jerusalem to be the ‘eternal and undivided’ capital of the Jewish state.” Condoleeza Rice has criticized Israel’s expansion decision as an impediment of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. Even an Israeli organization, Peace Now, insisted it was “not a natural expansion of the city.”
