In the small Gulf nation of Bahrain resides over 270,000 Indians. They are laborers on the various structures going up in the growing country. This is a similar situation to that of Qatar, which I reported on last week having reached a population of 1 million. With its massive population and large rate of unemployment, India is the main source of laborers for oil-rich gulf countries. In Bahrain, this is because of a shortage of potential workers, so the the Indians were welcome and vital. However, it is now starting to appear that India offers more opportunities than Bahrain. India has now instituted a minimum wage for maids and housekeepers in the country and there is more developing infrastructure. This gulf state now finds itself in the unique position of having to convince its immigrant population, many still not citizens, to stay in the country. They are making it easier to become a citizen, but still, we may see an exodus out of Bahrain back to the motherland.
